The US Office of Personnel Management Releases Retirement Quick Guide

(June 14, 2023) The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) recently created a Retirement Quick Guide, a reference worksheet to help federal employees prepare for and navigate the voluntary retirement process.

The guide includes:

An overview of the three- to five-month process

The date of separation for retirement to when your retirement package is processed by payroll can take between 30 and 45 days. OPM’s intake for system setup (which includes interim payments) can take an additional 10 to 15 days. The longest part of the process includes a thorough review of your benefits by OPM which can take up to 90 days.

A Tracking Your Retirement worksheet for important milestones

Page two of the guide includes OPM’s worksheet which details every milestone as well as the subtasks for each phase.

A quick reference to frequent causes of delay

Delays can be caused by several factors including court orders, settlements, special annuities, past and current workers’ comp claims, non-concurrent full-time federal employment, missing documents, and changes of address.

Key terms explained

Finally, the guide determines and defines certain terms including interim pay, health and life insurance, services online, adjusted payments, and annuity payment date.
